Vanaja lost her husband very early. She lived with her brother and his family. I think she was not treated well. She used to do all household work. She used to drink tea a lot and always in the little kitchen. They had 2 kitchens at that time, one big and one small in a village. When she died, some one got the asthi (ashes) home but instead of keeping outside the house on the top of the roof, brought it inside the house (some said that was the mistake). Some believe from that time onwards Manda, Vanaja's niece started acting wierd. She started talking like her Athya (Father's sister who is dead now). She started to go into little kitchen a lot and used to make & drink a lot of tea. They took her to doctor several times thinking she has become mentally ill. But whenever she went there the doctor declared she is alright and has no mental problems ( she behaved and talked fine in the doctor's office). At home she was a pain. Yelling, throwing things, abusing, drinking lot of tea etc.especially amavasya and full moon days.
One day whole family in the house went for a wedding overnight, leaving her locked in the house. They asked one of the farmer to sleep outside the house to guard. In the middle of the night he saw a female coming out of the house and then entering the house without opening the door (door was locked, and you know how olden days doors are -heavy). He freaked out and left the place in horror and told the whole episode to the family. People thought that she was possessed with 'Brahma Rakshashi' ( this kind will never leave until taking the life of the possessed ).
My meeting with Manda - I was small, may be 11 years. We went to the village for a wedding ceremony . We then stayed in Manda's house. The house was HUGE - huge backyard etc. I met Manda there when I was going around the house. Manda smiled at me and gestured me to come very sweetly. I followed her since no one had told me about her before and she took me to the small kitchen. She then asked me if I want some tea. I said no. She constantly kept asking me the same question over and over again. I got scared and I left the place telling her that I will come back later. My heart was beating as I ran to my mom. Next day again I saw her, she gestured to come but I did not go. She was very sweet and kind to me at that time.
Later I heard the story that when she was angry she was uncontrollable. She did not like rats, so she used to chase and catch them with bare hands and kill them. In the process she used to lift huge sack of grain ( that only a strong man could lift on his back with difficulty) in one hand and threw aside to get sight of rat/s. Three days before she was about to die, she already knew it. She started mumbling 'I will die, I will die'. She ran all over the house scared of something during that time. Then she felt as if she was trapped in one room , where they(family) locked her too and lost her life the third day. That was surprising to all in the house. Ultimately they lost Manda and it coincided with what people predicted about Brahma rakshasi. This story brought chill to my spine when I heard it the first time because I had met her before in that village at the very same kitchen.
Any thoughts?
